knit design: uncertainty is beautiful?
too much planning is not always a good thing, the sweater i'm designing (hereon will be referred to as "alpakka sweater") is a living proof of that.
i started the alpakka sweater this past weekend and everything went well for a while: the fold-in hem was nice and smooth, the fiber was divine to work with (love the alpaca and silk blend), i had even picked up stitches along the cast on edge with a contrast color yarn to add some interest, thought it would be a subtle detail to boot.and the luck only went this far. i knew i wanted to have a sweater with funky color combo, so with a purply blue hem, and a burgundy one as the next layer of color would be interesting, but the result? no. it was screaming "i'm still in the primary school" way too loud! so, i ripped out everything and that was that.
i have become friends with knitting frogs.
it did not really stop there. i actually crossed out most of the original ideas and started over. sometimes, too much planning can limit one's creativity. so, i'm just going to "knit with the flow"; whatever comes to mind is going to be expressed in my stitches. as long as i'm keeping the gauge and the tension straight, which luckily, i had my calculator by my side at all times. whew!
so, no more fold-in hems. a contrast color cast on edge was instead used, paired with warm burgundy color. and what was that pinky edges... well, i'm not sure yet but it was a pretty good practice for intarsia knitting, lemme tell ya! i have little ideas as to how the design is going to turn out, however, i am not too worry at this point as whatever it will become, it will be wearable and i am not going turn down an opportunity to wear alpaca and silk.

I like both versions of the design so far, but I agree about the color combination in the first. I find them very tough to plan.

How exciting. I really like how the second version looks. I can hardly wait to see more.

It's great that you are flexible enough to let the knitting come to you, rather than force the knitting. Good luck with it!

Lovely colour combination. Keep going with the flow and experiment. Have fun creating a work of art.

I love that you are going with the flow of the sweater and not writing out the complete pattern beforehand. Wonder if it will change your knitting experience and keep things interesting to the end? PS - I just used this yarn for the first time in my SYNO scarf. It will make a SOFT sweater!

The burgundy, orange and pink look great together, they remind me of that funky lovely company Oilily. I think if you follow your gut, you can't really go wrong!

When you plan, the colors never come out like you think. You'll definitely like the color scheme better if you just go with the flow. I like how it looks so far.

Hang in there! I love the colour combination of the burgundy, orangy, pink one. Had want to knit a Trivoli in those colours with leftover yarn but afraid that there may not be enough.

beautiful colours- but it is amazing how playing around with the placement/positioning makes so much difference to the look. Have fun experimenting! the yarn sounds divine..

I'm loving the orange border on the purple! I'm going to withold judgement on the pink edges until I see more of where you're going with them. They've got potential, I just can't quite picture what they're doing yet. But the orange and purple? I'm really liking those.

With all the planning we often do when knitting, sometimes it's nice to let go and do a little "improvisational" knitting. I love your yarn and color choices and look forward to watching them play out.
