learn to sew

afterall, i do not need too much convincing to take up another hobby. in a few days, i will own a sewing machine, i will start stashing fabrics of amy butler and alexander henry.

i have also decided to join the sisterhood of this going to be fabulous sewalong.

still, is sewing difficult? more difficult than knitting? i have, like, zero sewing skills. but can't be that hard, can it? i guess i will find out in a few days. hopefully, by the end of this fabulous sewalong, i will own at least one beautiful floral skirt and have skills to make many later!

I also think this sewalong will be fantastic. Start with a fairly easy pattern and you will be hooked...

How wonderful! Good for you! Can't wait to see all the stuff you sew up. I'm sure they will all be beautiful. You learn stuff quick. I'd love to learn to sew someday, it'll be nice to make skirts.

Hi! I'm new to your blog but was so excited to read this because I just got a sewing machine on Monday! I have no idea how to use it yet, but hopefully with a little patience it won't be that bad. Can't wait to see some of your eventual sewing creations!

Yay! I'm so glad we were able to get you to join.. hee hee.

I second Angela's comment - I'm so glad you've decided to join!

I don't know how to sew, so I signed up for classes at the local adult center. I was unsure what to expect, but it is really a good learning experience. I am learning quite a bit. Hopefully I'll hae some sewing FO's to add to my knitting FO's in the near future. :)

I used to sew historically accurate costumes for a living and my sewing machine and I were on very intimate terms. My advice is to just keep practising with using different ratio speeds (how fast the dogfeet feed the fabric to the needle), stitches per inch, and stitch types (straight, zig-zag, decorative) until you know all your machine's quirks. It took about three months of sewing to figure out that my bobbin coupling gets clogged with dust and fabric "fluff"; that the presser foot likes to come untightened; that different fabrics require different spi and ratio speeds.

Good luck!

Welcome to our new obsession! :-) Sewing isn't difficult, it just requires time and care to do it "correctly." You'll learn quickly and we have a good support system.

It will be fun to have you in the sewalong. I am looking forward to learning to sew different things.

I just joined, too! Personally I think sewing is harder that knitting, if only for the fact that it's much less portable!

I've been reading your blog for a few months now. You do such great work! I'm excited to see what you'll be sewing!

Oh fun! I joined too, and I know very little about sewing, but that is what it is all about. Can't wait to see what you make, Blossom ;)

Oh I'm sure you can do it with all the help we can get. Love amy's fabric..I want to make those lovely bags featured in her site.
