what makes blue beautiful?

i have been thinking a lot about colors lately, and a lot about why i would find certain colors attractive, and why i am drawn to certain hues almost invariably given the opportunity. i have no aversion to any color families, i love them all, but most of the time, i end up with a stash full of blues, grays, creams and reds. it's really interesting, when you think about it.

however it gives me no aesthetic satisfaction or any sense of style, when i wear just blues, grays or reds. and i have such admiration for those high fashion girls who can always throw multitudes of colors together and accentuates the focal attention to that touch of bright blue, that spark of yellow... that unexpected violet.

so i started to think about complementing colors. what makes blue beautiful? is it yellow? or white? how about red? and how can i make gray not boring? do you think about those things when you pick up your favorite color to wear in the morning? or is it just me overly obsessing?

lately i'm very into bright colors, those suffocating, scream in your face type of bright colors. i'm drawn to yellow very much. and the boldness of yellow and purple and black and whites is just so amazing. and full of confidence, too. i'm also drawn to some greens. i'm never a huge fan of greens, but i ended up getting some of the most amazing handmade green bags from drikab. it's like spring, so effortlessly refreshing. drika is an amazing artist, the way she pairs up colors is ever so intriguing. and these whimsical bags are so beautifully made.

and i found myself picking up these stack of blue/green cottons from kaffe fassett's collection. i'm not sure what the gingham is going to be, but they look so vintage. i'm thinking a pair of lounge pants with the green stripes, and a pin tuck shirt with the blue shot cotton. and one day, i'll make something yellowy to go with the blue.

i also made an attempt to wear color tights, with my newly acquired bally flats. teal is beautiful by itself. but i think it looks even more teal with black. it draws you in. makes you love teal even more.

Very thoughtful color analysis...

Beautiful post, and very thoughtful. These same themes have been in my thoughts lately, spurred by the third year of Project Spectrum. In fact, I have a post queued up for tonight on a similar subject, if you are at all interested.

Thanks for the inspiration, Blossom~

the bold colors are lovely. I love gray myself and bright colors help me not dissapear into an all gray fog. That bag is lovely and the handle (it's called something I know, upholstry tape?) is fantastic!

I love teal! My aunt says it's a universal color, and I think she's right, it goes with everything! I love teal and brown together! I, too, am partial to the gray shades and try to brighten it up with a great contrasting color.

That's a beautiful bag! I've really got to learn how to sew!

The bag is gorgeous. I'm drawn to green in particular, but I don't wear it as often as I can because more often than not I'll just throw something on (usually black top with jeans). Your post is pretty inspiring - everyone could use a little more color, wardrobe-wise :)

No, I don't think you're alone in your way of thinking, or that you're over obsessing. I think it comes with the territory of being a knitter/sewer that a person notices, appreciates, and enjoys color more than most. I enjoyed your post. =)

Those tights are gorgeous and your thoughts on colour are very interesting. I seem to go back to the same colours again and again and very rarely wear black or all one colour. You have made me consider my wardrobe and I can see now that there are very definite colour themes, I think perhaps I need to break out and explore some new colours!

That bag is amazing! I am all into the bright colors with black myself now too. It jsut makes the brighter colors look so much more modern and fresh.

The bag and pouch are lovely. I like how the colors are put together.

I think black (especially black Bally shoes... I have shoe envy!!) does that for most colours. That's why I wear alot of black- because the other splashes of colour in my wardrobe look so nice against it. Beautiful bags by drikab too- I love how the hot pink contrasts the other colours, and the heavy braid for the handles is a wonderful detail.

I've been meaning to comment on this post forever - I love those bags and your thoughts on color combinations. I have found that my favorite colors are the tertiary ones on the color wheel - colors that are rich, but not *pure* anything. I love unexpected combinations. I think grey is really brought to life by yellow, but it could also look wonderful with a hot pink or chartreuse. The colors I wear are not always the colors that I knit with or decorate with. I cannot wear red, but I love to have it in the house and on the needles. I think crafting opens up a world of color to us. I love your fabric choices. I'd love to shop wherever it is that you go! Oh - and I love the teal tights. It is hard for me to pull that look off, so instead I wear a pair of red or yellow shoes with an outfit that is mostly sedate. It works better for those of us who do not have lovely, slender ankles. Hope that the move is going well...
